ESSOS

Project leader:

Rogerio Jorge, (rogerio.jorge@wisc.edu)

Project description:

The ESSOS team intends to design the next generation of fusion energy devices. Using the open-source code ESSOS, we intend to show that both coil optimization and magnetic field optimization can be performed using python-based software such as JAX and DIFFRAX. The goal is to generate simplified coils and equilibria able to confine alpha particles stemming from fusion reactions.

The intern would help the ESSOS team to integrate all of the core modules of ESSOS into abstract classes in order to simplify the optimization procedure. Furthermore, the intern would help find more efficient optimization strategies to find better performing fusion devices.

Intern needs:

The intern will work on scientific Python libraries, such as Spicy, numpy, and JAX, so knowledge of those would be preferred. Furthermore, basic calculus and statistics would be a plus, given the optimization character of the projects. Physics is not necessary; only a minimal amount will be given at the beginning of the project, which is not crucial for its completion.

Application Requirements:

  1. Review the available projects by visiting the various project pages.
  2. Interns should apply through the UW Student Jobs portal. Applicants who are not currently admitted or enrolled as a UW-Madison Student or without a UW NetID can login as well as create an account. Please note, you must apply to each project individually that you want to be considered for.
  3. Application materials submitted through the UW Student Jobs portal should include:
  4. Submit a resume, cover letter, and three references as part of your application.
  5. Interviews will be arranged for selected candidates on a rolling basis after applications close.
